What is the difference between Domain hosting, DNS hosting, Email hosting & Website Hosting?
A. Domain Name
- This is the website address that people type in to get to your website.
- It is good practice to be aware of your domain login details and also to ensure the contact details are up to date.
- This will ensure you receive the domain renewal notifications and can login to renew it whenever required.
- This will help ensure your website never goes down due to non-renewal or lapses.
B. Domain Name System (DNS) Hosting
- This is another critical component you need to have in place for your website and emails to work.
- DNS hosting is generally provided by your domain name registrar (above) but it can also be taken over by other providers.
- If your DNS is with a different provider you will need to ensure that this arrangement stays in place.
- Alternatively, you can request your domain name registrar to setup DNS hosting for you.
- Some registrars may charge a small annual fee for this.
- If you use a provider different to your domain name registrar, ideally you will also have login access to make changes to your DNS.
C. Email Hosting
- If you have email addresses or intend to setup email addresses with your domain name (e.g. info@YourBusinessName.com.au) then you will need to make arrangements for this.
- Basic email hosting is generally offered by a domain name registrar as a package or another provider can be used for the setup of this.
- Your email provider can be different to the domain name provider and DNS host above.
- However, if your email requirements are basic then it might be best to have this service provided by your domain name registrar for ease of management.
- If you already have an existing email arrangement you will need to ensure you continue this service.
D. Website Hosting
- This is the service that will hold your website so that it can be accessed over the internet.
- You will need a domain name & DNS hosting in place so that your website address can be linked with your website.
- We provide you with the hosting of your website as part of the monthly hosting and licence fee.
- So you do not require a separate website hosting arrangement with a different provider.
- When your website is ready to go live we will provide you instruction to take to your DNS host above.
- Alternatively, if you have login details for your DNS service then we can also make these changes on your behalf.
If you have any questions in relation to the above or you are unsure of your arrangements, please contact us as soon as possible to ensure you have the right solution in place before your website goes live.
