How do I use the Google Keyword Planner Tool to determine keywords / keyphrases?

The Adwords tool has been integrated further into the paid area of Google Adwords and is now called the Keyword Planner.

The areas that are covered below are:

A. Logging into the Keyword Planner

B. Setting up the Keyword search

C. Reading the results

If you do not have a Google account you will need to set this up by clicking here prior to the steps below.

A. Logging into the Keyword Planner

  1. Login to Google Adwords here.
  2. Enter your Google username and password
  3. Important: You MUST click "skip the guided setup" if you're keen to keep your credit card details away form Google.
  4. Set up your time zone and currency preferences.
  5. DO NOT click the "Start first campaign" button. This will allow you to proceed without handng over your credit card details.
  6. Click Tools
  7. Click Keyword Planner

B. Setting up the Keyword search

  1. Click from the first of the options presented “Search for Keyword and ad group ideas”
  2. In the first area insert one keyword/ keyphrase per line
  3. Under the area “Targeting” edit the locations if you want to be specific to certain areas
    1. Have "Australia" if you service Australia wide
    2. Or use multiple global locations
  4. Click “Get ideas”
  5. Click the tab “Keyword Ideas”
  6. Your specific terms will be displayed at the top, with similar terms underneath.

C. Reading the results

If your Keyword(s) are not appearing under the Search terms area that means that there is not enough data to produce any results and we would not recommend optimising for this. The default order is those closest to the term(s) you have inserted, however you can also order the results based on the below criteria:

Average Monthly Searches - The average number of times people have searched for this exact keyword based on the targeting settings that you've selected. It is recommended to optimise for a term with over 1,000 page views.

Competition-  This is the amount of competition for this term. It is relative to the amount of monthly searches

Please note that this data is across all devices (desktop and laptop computers, tablets, and mobile phones) so does not cater for device specific searches.

As The Keyword Planner is part of Google's Adword area, you are presented with the data to purchase paid adds if you are interested.
