What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?
When Internet users search for specific content, products or simply more information on the Internet they enter specific keywords or phrases into search engines like, Google, Yahoo or Bing to find it.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is about steps you can take to set up your website to be found by Internet users using keywords and phrases relevant to your business. Most of these steps cost nothing to set up if it is done directly by you. This is known as 'Organic SEO', meaning that you are not paying to advertise your site in high visibility areas of the search results page of a search engine. This guide is designed to provide you basic SEO knowledge you need for your website to make it visible for organic searches.
Organic SEO improves the visibility and ranking of your website in various search engines in the long run. So, if done correctly, you will find a lot more of your target audience visiting your website. This will have different implications for different businesses. For some this will result in greater sales through their website or provide greater awareness to your target audience.
If you are after some quick exposure in search engines you may consider a paid listing option such as Google AdWords where you pay for certain search keywords which when searched for makes your site appear above organic search results or in high visibility areas. This option does not translate to SEO of your site. This level of visibility only lasts as long as your are paying for your nominated keywords and is usually referred to as Search Engine Marketing (SEM).
