Why and how do I submit my sitemap?

Most search engines can pick up your website or changes to it automatically. However, there are some steps you can take to make sure the search engines have got you on their radar.

Please note that you cannot submit you "staging" website to the search engines, so you should only submit your site once it is live on the Internet on your own website address.

If you are unsure when this is please ask your Account Manager.

Here are instructions for submitting your website to search engines:

XML Sitemaps

  1. Go to http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ (this is a free sitemap generator)
  2. Enter your main website address under "Starting URL"
  3. Select an option for "Change frequency" depending on how often you intend to update your website.
  4. For "Priority" select "Automatically Calculated Priority"
  5. Click the "Start" button.
  6. Once it finishes generating, click the link for "Download un-compressed XML Sitemap"
  7. Save the "sitemap.xml" file on your computer
  8. Email it to your account manager for upload to your website's root directory.
  9. Your Account Manager will confirm that this has been done and provide you steps for setting up Google Analytics.

Search engines may take anywhere between 1 week to 8 weeks to detect all of the links on your site. To monitor if all the pages of your website have been picked up please refer to the "Results" tab on the left.

Please refer to the FAQ "How do I check my website in search engines?" for the next steps.
